5 Effective Herbal Skin Treatments to Fight Acne, Eczema, and Other Skin Conditions

If you have acne, eczema, rosacea, or other skin conditions, prescribed medications may not always work for you. And you may not want to take another pill or use another medicated ointment that just adds more chemicals to your body. Like many of us, you’re looking for natural, alternative remedies to treat your skin condition.

To help, we’ve put together a list of 5 herbal skin treatments* that will help reduce inflammation & redness and lessen future breakouts.

(*Before trying any of the remedies, make sure you do a patch test to check for any sensitivities or reactions.)

Aloe vera

Aloe vera is a succulent plant well-known for its soothing properties. It contains natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory elements that help reduce redness, swelling, and acne breakouts.

It’s also an excellent skin moisturizer and protectant. So if you have dry skin from using other products, it’ll help hydrate your skin.

How to use

Clean the affected area and then apply a thin layer of aloe vera gel or cream to your skin twice a day. It’s best to use aloe vera directly from an aloe vera plant. You can also buy aloe vera gel from the store, but avoid the bright green aloe gel, which often includes triethanolamine and other  artificial ingredients that can aggravate your skin.

Tea tree oil

Tea tree oil is derived from the leaves of the tea tree plant. This essential oil has antimicrobial properties that can kill the bacteria that cause acne. It also has anti-inflammatory elements to reduce swelling and redness.

As mentioned above, it’s important to do a patch test first before using broadly, particularly because some people can experience an allergic reaction to tea tree oil. Additionally, do not use tea tree oil on diaper rashes or any areas that are under tight or synthetic clothing.

How to use

Tea tree oil comes in creams, gels, or as an essential oil. It’s best to look for a product with 5% or less concentration to avoid skin irritation. First, clean the affected area and then apply the product topically twice a day.

Green tea

Green tea has several skin protective benefits. It contains antioxidants called “catechins” that are anti-inflammatory to help reduce redness and swelling. What’s great about these “catechins” is they also reduce the skin’s oil production – which is especially helpful for acne-prone skin.

How to use

You have 3 options for using green tea to treat your skin condition. You can ingest the tea by brewing a cup and drinking it. Or you can apply an extract of green tea to the affected area. Or you can try both!

Chamomile

Chamomile is an herb with anti-inflammatory properties and antioxidants. It’s a gentle remedy that will help soothe and hydrate your skin to promote healing and lessen further breakouts or flare-ups.

How to use

Chamomile is found in toners, face washes, or creams. For acne, clean the affected area with a chamomile face wash or toner. If you have eczema, apply a chamomile cream or ointment to the affected area. And if you have rosacea, use a toner or compress where needed.
