The Many Uses and Benefits of Palm Glycerin in Liquid Supplements

At KidsWellness, you’ve probably noticed one consistent ingredient in all of Dr. Rydland’s herbal supplements that are given orally – palm glycerin. But what is it? And why do we use it in our liquid supplements?

Read on to learn more about the versatility of palm glycerin.

What is palm glycerin?

Palm glycerin was first discovered in the 18th century as a byproduct of soap and candle making. But it’s now derived from plant byproducts like palm, soy, or coconut oil (but we only use the palm oil variety).

Palm glycerin is a clear, odorless liquid (sometimes also called glycerol). It’s soluble in both water and alcohol. And has a syrup-like consistency with a mild, sweet taste. But this doesn’t mean palm glycerin is sugar. It’s actually a sugar alcohol.

Though sugar alcohols are sweet, it doesn’t affect your blood sugar and body the same way table sugar does. It's much lower in calories and has a glycemic index of almost zero. Meaning it won’t cause you to have spikes in your blood sugar and is safe for diabetics.

What is palm glycerin used for?

A variety of pharmaceutical, food, and cosmetic products use palm glycerin. You’ll find palm glycerin in things like lotions, shampoos, dishwasher detergent, cleaning wipes, shaving cream, makeup, heart medication, pre-cooked pasta, and processed fruits & vegetables.

It’s a versatile product helping other products function better.

For example, palm glycerin in ice cream and frozen yogurts prevents ice crystals from forming. It’s used in foods to help oil and water ingredients mix together.

Palm glycerin is used in skin care products because it traps moisture in and is safe for sensitive skin. And it’s found in toothpaste to prevent the paste from drying or hardening in the tube.

And doctors prescribe palm glycerin to help with issues that cause eye pressure, like glaucoma.

Why is palm glycerin used in Dr. Rydland’s liquid herbal supplements?

There are several reasons we use palm glycerin in our liquid supplements.

  1. Palm glycerin helps dissolve the ingredients in the supplement making it easier for your body to absorb the herbal supplement and allowing you to maximize its medicinal benefits.
  2. Palm glycerin acts as a sweetener (but adds no sugar!) masking any bitter flavors from the herbs (making it easier for you to consume the supplement).
  3. Palm glycerin is a preservative helping extend the shelf life of your supplements by preventing the growth of microorganisms or bacteria. Your supplements will last longer and be ready the next time you need them.
  4. Palm glycerin is a non-toxic, non-irritating ingredient making it gentle and safe for you and your family to ingest. You don’t have to worry about any adverse effects or reactions.
